Requirements

Must-haves

  • 5+ years of platform/DevOps engineering experience
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Experience with Terraform
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience in identity and auth systems, and infrastructure automation
  • Ability to ramp up quickly on unfamiliar tools, using documentation and AI-assisted tooling as needed
  • Ability to operate autonomously, knowing when to ask clarifying questions versus proceeding independently
  • Comfort building in a 0-to-1 environment, laying groundwork other engineers will build on
  • Interest in a generalist, learning-first approach over deep specialization in a single stack
  • Strong communication skills in both spoken and written English

Nice-to-haves

  • Startup experience
  • Hands-on experience with Istio, ArgoCD, Keycloak, OPA, AlloyDB, OpenTelemetry, ESO, Atlas, Valkey, or Flipt
  • Experience with event-streaming or workflow systems (e.g. Redpanda, Temporal)
  • Exposure to healthcare-data-adjacent systems or standards (e.g. HL7/FHIR, Medplum/HAPI, OIE)
  • Prior experience on a platform engineering team supporting multiple product teams
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent

What you will work on

  • This is a full-time role (40 hours/week) for a 6-month contract, with room to grow into a long-term engagement
  • Foundational hire who'll help build a self-service developer platform from the ground up alongside engineering leadership and a small group of collaborators
  • Build and maintain the shared infrastructure product teams build on top of (e.g., GKE, Istio, ArgoCD, Terraform, CI/CD templates)
  • Own the auth and identity layer, including tenant context (e.g., Keycloak, BFF, OPA)
  • Build and maintain the backend platform layer — service templates and shared interceptors for auth, tenant, and OTel
  • Build and maintain the frontend shell in React, handling auth, routing, tenant context, and the event bus
  • Stand up the platform foundation in phases, from cluster and CI/CD setup (e.g., GKE, Istio, ArgoCD, GitLab CI, Tilt, Buf) to core services (e.g., Keycloak, BFF, AlloyDB, OPA, OpenTelemetry, ESO, Atlas, Valkey, Flipt)
  • Own database platform concerns like connection pooling and tenant schema provisioning (e.g., AlloyDB), while product teams manage their own tables and queries
  • Build observability infrastructure, so product teams get instrumentation automatically (e.g., OTel Collector, dashboards, alerting)
  • Support the data platform layer as it comes online (e.g., OIE, Medplum/HAPI, Redpanda, Temporal, KServe, CDC, Iceberg)
  • Harden the platform toward production readiness over time (e.g., promotion flow, monitoring and security maturity, disaster recovery, load testing)
